U of U Shooting Drills

Below are the details of some of the shooting and individual offensive drills from the U of U camps.

Handshots

Form shooting practice.  Begin close to the rim (on the block) and work your way around and back making 3-5 shots at each spot.  When you get back to the original block take one step back and go around and back again.  When you get back to the beginning take one more step back and go around one more time.

Key Points

  • BEEF (Balance, Eyes, Elbow, Follow-through)
  • Keep shooting hand on top of the ball
  • Keep back straight and the ball high
  • Roll up on toes
  • Use the wrist, not the arm
  • Keep your sholders over your toes
  • Snap wrist and follow through
  • Tuck chin on follow-through
  • Concentrate on making shots "clean"

Tight Spins

You can do these first by starting under the basket facing the backboary, or under the foam and facing out under the basket.  Spin the ball off the glass by using the wrist and not the arms, while keeping the ball above your waist and outside the mid-point of your body.  Try to get to 20 makes as quickly, and in as few shots as possible without letting the ball hit the floor, or letting the ball come below your sholders on the rebound.

  • Keep hands on the sides of the ball
  • Keep ball above the waist
  • Keep ball outside the midpoint of your torso
  • User wrist flick, not your arms
  • Spin the ball tightly off the glass
  • Go with force and power - get the ball as high as you can
